Governor Healy Coverage

As a female living in Boston, I am quite proud that our capital and state are women run right now. Our governor is Maura Healey, and the mayor of Boston is Michelle Wu. While I might not agree with all of their politics and policies, it's still so incredible to see women in those positions of power.

One thing I have noticed is the extra scrutiny over Governor Healey. There are two recent headlines that really stick out to me. One was about someone she had appointed to a Supreme Court, and another about when she notifies the media about her travel.

Let's dive into the stupid one first.

Here's the first reason I find this stupid. Shouldn't it speak volumes that Governor Healey has enough respect for her former partner that even though things fell through, she's still willing to give her such a prestigious job? If it were me, I wouldn't touch my ex with a 39 1/2 foot pole, let alone vouch for him to get such a great job. Who gives a hoot if they dated forever ago? She clearly feels she is professionally qualified, and that's all that matters.

Would this have been an issue if a male governor did the same thing? Why is this different than all the times men have handed their buddies jobs over people who are qualified? This is being questioned because she is a female, because she is a lesbian, and because people love to be annoying. Like I said before, instead of the focus being on the scandal of her nominating an ex, why isn't it the fact at how impressive it is that Gov. Healey nominated her, and the fact that there's another strong woman capable of a powerful job?

I truly didn't realize how much of a feminist I am until this very moment.

Second headline: Announcing Travel.

Okay there are so many things.

I understand she is our governor, but the constant demand on knowing everything about everyone nowadays is getting ridiculous. Yes, I think she should disclose where she is professionally, but she has a family. She has two kids who I doubt she wants to be covered by the press. If she wants to keep her kids private, and her family life private, she should be entitled to that.

Does anyone remember the saying, what happens behind closed doors stays there? Just because she is a state official, that does not make her personal life official business. Do you have to report to your boss where you're going on vacation or do you just request time off? If her cabinet knows where she is, and she is safe and accounted for, why should it matter where she is?

In regard to William Galvin being in charge of the state because Healey was out of town and Driscoll was with her family, again, who cares? Is there someone in charge? Yes. Should we have been notified? Maybe. Did anything happen? No. Basically, I'm going with the following mentality:

You can't control losing a family member while the governor is out of state. This is why we have the policies in place for situations like this. This is why we have a government and a hierarchy of it.

Although I am an avid social media user, I also am fully aware of how accessible it has made people feel, as well as the entitlement people feel to have 24/7 access to others. I know Healey is a government official but they're shady about everything else, why are you mad that she took a vacation? Why aren't you mad about everything else?

With the risk of sounding like a total hypocrite again, I am an avid hater of "what-about-ism", where you have someone complain about one issue and then you have the other person who tries to one up you with some worse issue. Like "we have to work on global warming" then someone is like "what about gun control?!" "what about about abortion?!" "what about taxes?!" etc.

Instead of the governor taking a vacation, we should be covering these issues. Im not saying one issue is more important than the other, but let's focus on the bigger issues that affects actual human lives, not their jealousy levels that they can't go to Puerto Rico.

I mean that totally also raises the whole "iN tHiS eCoNoMy?!" bull too but whatever.

Can the news cover actual news please? That's the bottom line.
