Small Acts of Kindness That Changed My Day: Small Acts, Big Impact

In a world that often feels rushed and chaotic, small acts of kindness can create ripples of positivity. These gestures not only brighten someone else's day but also inspire others to pay it forward. Here are a few simple acts of kindness that I have started doing in my own life, and I'm hoping they can encourage a culture of compassion and generosity.

1. Compliment a Stranger

A genuine compliment can make someone's day. Whether it's praising a colleague's work or admiring a stranger's outfit, these small words of encouragement can uplift spirits and foster a sense of connection.

2. Leave a Generous Tip

When dining out, consider leaving a tip that exceeds the standard rate (15%). This small act not only supports service workers but also sets an example for others to appreciate the hard work of those in the service industry. I typically don't go out to eat if I can't afford to tip 20%, but that's a personal choice.

I also fully understand that it isn't always possible to leave a grand tip, so I encourage you to help the server as you can while at the table. When you're done eating, try and stack up some of the plates, stack the menus, and of course always say thank you. If you don't feel comfortable stacking the plates, just please remember to treat every person at the restaurant with kindness because you don't know how their night has gone. Honestly this is true for everyone you come across, but I've noticed people tend to be more rude to restaurant staff.

3. Write a Thank You Note

In our digital age, a handwritten thank you note can feel like a breath of fresh air. Expressing gratitude to someone who has helped you can inspire them to spread kindness further. I promise you, no one will ever be mad at you for sending a thank you note.

4. Hold the Door Open

It may seem trivial, but holding the door for someone can leave a lasting impression. This simple act shows consideration and respect for others, reminding us to be mindful of those around us. I challenge you to do this whether or not someone has their hands full. Maybe even let them cut in front of you in line as well.

5. Share Your Skills

Offering your skills—be it tutoring, cooking, or gardening—can be a powerful way to spread kindness. Sharing your talents not only helps others but also fosters community and strengthens bonds. Its truly amazing the knowledge that you have in your brain that you think is common knowledge. Help a family member learn a new trick on their phone, show your kids how to safely make something to eat, or make a new little hat or blanket for that new baby in your life. Anything can help!

6. Donate to a Local Charity

I feel like there's always the idea that donation automatically means money. There are so many other ways to donate. Whether it’s clothes, food, or time, donating to local charities can make a significant difference. Your generosity can inspire others to contribute as well, creating a cycle of kindness in your community.

This will also help you declutter your house as well! Check out things like your local Buy Nothing Facebook pages to give stuff away to people in your neighborhood as well.

These small acts of kindness may seem insignificant and simple, but they have the power to create a wave of positivity. By incorporating these gestures into our daily lives, we can inspire others to join in and spread kindness, one small act at a time.

It's a new year, people, let's make damn sure this one doesn't get away from us.

Please share acts of kindness you've done or seen recently in the comments, or send us a DM on Facebook & Instagram, or email us at kindness@lilbitcollective.com. We'd love to feature some next week.
